Welcome to Hawk Nation! Nelson Junior High opened in August 2024, introducing a new era of collaborative and individualized learning for the Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD). Nelson Junior High is the district’s 18th junior high. The school was designed to embrace the newest trends and technologies in education. Nelson’s design, including a three-story floor plan (the learning tower) allows academics for each grade level, from 6th grade to 8th grade, to be on its own dedicated floor. This learning tower is surrounded by one-story wings that house the cafeteria, gym, electives and fine arts facilities.
Cutting edge features allow the curriculum to be delivered in new and exciting ways, and six flexible-use spaces encourage students to collaborate with each other.
Nelson Junior High offers Katy ISD’s full array of athletics, along with robust programs in choir, band, orchestra and theater. There are also career launch pad classes that invites eighth graders to explore career possibilities.
And Nelson Junior High helps make the transition to high school easy, too. A common "learning green" is shared with neighboring Freeman High School, and the fine arts and athletic departments at the junior high and high school are aligned, with team teaching and collaborating on a daily basis.
In other words, school just got really cool.
