Introducing Speedway Park, a thrilling new amenity for the scooter set
Whether they have scooters, hoverboards or other types of wheels, Elyson’s youngest residents will want to race over to Speedway Park, planned to open this fall as one of the community’s newest recreational amenities.
A colorful circular racetrack is the centerpiece of this new park, which will also include play areas with swing sets, climbing structures and a grassy green.
While Speedway Park will welcome Elyson residents of all ages, it’s expected to have the strongest appeal to children between the ages of 2 and 7, who can head over to race their scooters around the 400-foot track, stopping for more games and adventures along the way.
“With our third onsite Katy ISD elementary opening in August, Elyson has an ever-growing number of families with young children,” said Heather Gustafson, marketing director for Brookfield Residential, Elyson’s developer. “We wanted Speedway Park to be a place where kids of all ages would be very excited to enjoy their free time.”
With “start” and “finish” lines, and distance markers along the way, Speedway Park is designed to inspire kids to engage in spirited races and games.
The track will have a rubberized surface to make it safer for spills and to help reduce heat in the summer. The track and adjoining play areas will have colorful surfaces and canopies featuring Elyson’s signature color palette of vivid earth and sky tones.
“This is an age group with lots of energy, and Speedway Park will be be an active park where they can let their imaginations run wild and burn off lots of energy,” said Andrew Gressett, an associate designer with SWA Houston, which created the park design.
The track will connect several themed play areas within the park. As kids race past on their scooters, they may be tempted to stop, park and explore further adventures.
One area will have swing sets and slides, while others will boast a variety of climbing structures and mounds.
“Getting vertical is thrilling to kids, especially in a city as flat as Houston,” Gressett said. “Even climbing just a few feet off the ground can give a child an exciting new perspective.”
The play areas will also be connected by an internal path of rubbery stepping stones, giving kids another opportunity for discovery.
Speedway Park will have an open lawn area where kids can fly kites, kick a soccer ball around, or simply gaze at the clouds.
Next to the lawn, there’ll be a seating area with a shade pavilion, so parents can sit and watch children play.
Leafy sycamore trees will provide shade and seasonal color throughout the park. Other landscaping will include native pollinator perennials and ornamental grasses such as Gulf Coast Muhly, which has flowing green stems and spectacular fluffy pink blooms in the fall.
When it opens, Speedway Park will join other Elyson amenities ranging from major community centers and parks like Lakeside Landing, Elyson House and Elyson Commons, to smaller neighborhood amenities such as Kaleidoscope Park and Fireside Park.
Speedway Park will be surrounded by some some of Elyson’s newest neighborhoods, just west of Katy-Hockley Cut-Off Road. The location is right across the road from Katy ISD’s third onsite elementary school in Elyson, opening in August.
