“Combination islands” catching on with homebuyers – see this one at Elyson
Everyone loves a big kitchen island, and one of the newest and most exciting trends in kitchen design is the “combination island.” This type of island goes beyond the traditional breakfast bar to create a large secondary casual dining space.
In Trendmaker’s model home in Elyson, the big curved island easily accommodates five comfortable bar seats. Instead of having a separate breakfast room space, this design keeps everyone engaged, right in the heart of the kitchen.
For larger or more formal occasions, the kitchen is open to the dining area. It’s also completely open to the family room, creating one large family gathering area.
“With the combination island, the space is very informal and open, and a wonderful way for families to still be gathered together even if everyone is doing something different, whether it be homework, cooking dinner, or eating,” says interior designer Marc Thee, in a Builder magazine article on the latest home design trends.
