Katy ranks No. 1 in Texas places to retire
A new report from SmartAsset ranks Katy as the No. 1 city in Texas to retire, and Katy’s abundance of hospitals and recreational opportunities have a lot to do with it.
SmartAsset analyzed several key factors to come up with it “best places to retire” index, including the number of doctors’ offices, recreational and entertainment amenities, and the size of the senior population.
With top-ranked hospitals such as the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist West, Katy ranked high above other area cities for healthcare. Katy has 17.6 doctors’ offices per 1,000 people, far exceeding cities such as Richmond (7.3), Tomball (8.8) and Humble (8.4).
Home to attractions such as LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch and the new John Paul Landing Park, Katy also led the way in recreation and entertainment, with 3.6 recreation attractions per 1,000 people.
Seniors make up about 12% of the population in the Katy area, according to the report.
(Curious about the rest of the Top 10? At No. 2 was the Dallas area city of Granbury, followed by Woodway, Livingston, Fredericksburg and Richmond. Rounding out the Top 10 were Tomball, Webster, Humble and Burnet.)
Elyson offers recreational amenities that are highly appealing for retirees, including Elyson House, which has a swimming pool that’s open year ‘round, along with tennis courts, a fitness center and gameroom. Elyson’s Lifestyle Director plans healthy and social events for residents of all ages, including low-impact water aerobics, movies and concerts on the event lawn and craft nights.
Elyson’s newest park will offer courts for bocce ball and pickleball, two popular low-impact sports.
Overall, Elyson’s master plan calls for 750 acres of parks, recreation centers and natural open spaces, including a trail system that will extend for nearly 30 miles when completed.
